The musical centers around a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive in New York's Alphabet City neighborhood under the shadow of AIDS.

It is Christmas Eve on the lower East side of New York City. A group of friends comes together and shares the night in a special way. Over the next year, as relationships grow and change, they have to struggle with paying the rent, eviction, death, drugs, and no day but today.
